The epic Beowulf shows us how a mans’ character is tested as he encounters difficult situations. The unknown author of Beowulf, leaves behind a mystique, an intriguing quality with which the character which hold our interest. The modern-day hero, Superman, also possesses these same qualities. Their modest actions are what helped these hero’s to become their peoples’ â€Å"ideal man.† nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;The first quality that earns a person’s respect between Beowulf and Superman is wealth. Neither of these men had a considerable amount of money. This helps the every day man relate to them more easily. In the epic, Beowulf’s home is far away from his lord’s castle. This passage shows us how Beowulf’s planning ahead led him to victory. By exposing the monster’s strengths as well as his tactics, Beowulf was able to counter-attack the monster and win. The second time when Beowulf shows us his intelligence is when he goes fights Grendel’s mother: She welcomed him in her claws. Clutched at him savagely but could not harm him. Tried to work her fingers through the tight Ring-woven mail on his breast, but tore And scratched in vain. . .(Raffel 475-479). Although his armor did not ultimately stop her, it slowed her down and gave Beowulf time to overcome her. For Superman, his intelligence comes from experience. Because of his daily duty of â€Å"protector of the Earth,† Superman reacts instantly to the problems he faces. When he fights enemies, Superman tries to have the fight on his terms. He lures the criminals out of the cities, away from the people. If that’s not possible he takes care of business in a quick and orderly fashion. This point is much more difficult to defend. However, when a verse contains salvation and baptism in the same line it does create nostalgia about performing a ritual for salvation. â€Å"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be co ndemned.† (Mark 16:16) Where as when salvation is granted and the person not being baptized, such as the criminal on the cross gives a very different feel. â€Å"And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’† (Luke 23:43) The rite of baptism, in this sense, gives one a great deal of benefits. A person will receive salvation, new birth (regeneration), the Holy Spirit, remission of sins, sanctified, set apart, etc. The list could go on. However, it seems all those benefits should come with faith in Christ and if they do, why is baptism necessary for salvation. If baptism is necessary then sacramentalism should be more important that evangelism. Throughout chapters 13, 14, and 15 I learned a lot about digital/direct-response advertising, sales promotion, and research within advertising. In particular I learned about digital media pros and cons, consumer advertising, and focus groups. I also discovered multiple things that I am able to apply to real life, for instance contests and sweepstakes. After looking more in depth into these parts of advertising, I definitely have a better understanding of them compared to before I looked through these chapters. My first impression on digital media was that it simply was anything that could be advertised over technology. However, after looking into it I discovered that not only does media have many benefits for advertising but it also have many negative sides to it. Some pros are that digital media offers advertising that is inexpensive, quick , measurable and easily targeted. It also serves as as a combination of interactive audio and video capabilities which is great for getting the consumers interest and focus. Lastly digital media is extremely flexible, which means you can change messages immediately depending on whats trending. As far as the cons to digital media only some forms of media advertising are doing well for some markets, so some aren’t ready to take the risk. The increase in obesity is not caused by the change in the gene pool, but rather by the change in the environment. This causes vulnerable populations to express the obesity phenotype (Stune, 1999). One in seven children ages 6-17 are considered to be obese. Most nutritionists will say that this is do to the lack of parental guidance. A childs parents should teach their child proper eating habits so that they wont run across problems in the future (Tomlin, 1999). Most doctors will calculate a childs body mass index (BMI), to figure out just how overweight a child is. If a childs BMI is over 30, they are considered obese. In order to calculate ones BMI, you would divide the your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters (Mokdad, 1999). What causes obesity?Weight gain among children is likely due to a combination of factors including: poordietary habits, genetic makeup, family lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and a childs ethnicity. Obesity is more prevalent among Hispanic, African-American and American Indian children, particularly girls (Mayohealth.org 1997). Overweight children are not necessarily overeaters. Unfortunately, much of thefood they enjoy contains high amounts of calories. A child doesnt have to eat huge quantities of food to put on excess weight. An extra 200 calories a day (the amount in four home-made chocolate chip cookies) can cause your child to gain almost one-half pound a week (Miller 3). Childhood Obesity3Studies show that childrens excessive consumption of high-calorie soft drinksand fruit beverages may be adding to the problem. The average teen drinks almost 65 gallons of soft drinks annually; school-age children have more than doubled their consumption of these beverages in the past two decades. Children also eat a lot of fast-food, which tends to be high in fat and calories (Miller 5). Although diet is a factor, low levels of physical activity may play a greater role in childhood obesity than eating lots of high-calorie food. Why are children today less active? The American Heart Association reports that, on average, children watch 17 hours of television aweek. And thats not counting the time spent playing video and computer games. One study found the odds of being overweight were nearly five times greater for youth watching more than five hours of television per day compared with those who watched from zero to two hours per day (Mayohealth.org 1997). According to a 1996 U.S. Surgeon Generals report on fitness, nearly half ofyoung people ages 12 to 21 are not vigorously active. The American College of Sports Medicine reports that, due to financial constraints, only one-third of schools now offer physical education classes and many children today find team sports too competitive or costly to join (Mayohealth.org 1997). They found no relationship between the weight ofthe adoptive parents and adopted children. But there was a strong link between the weight of the adopted children and their biological parents, even though 90 percent of the children had been adopted before the age of 1 (Miller 10). The researchers concluded that genetic factors are important in determining obesity in adults. And when a genetic tendency is combined with habits that promote weight gain, its more likely that a child will be overweight. Important: If obesity is common in your family, pay extra attention to diet and exercise (Miller 11). Meals should be oriented toward a healthy diet with 30% fat calories or less (Moran, 1999). Parents should also only offer snacks when the child is hungry. Make healthy snacks, such as fresh fruit, raw vege tables, cheese and crackers, or peanut butter on crackers. Keep water, fresh fruits, containers of baby carrots and celery, in the refrigerator, also have boxes of raisons handy. Dilute juices with water by at least half, to make sure that the child intakes the recommended amount of water and cuts down on the calories that are in juices. Small size bottled water make good drinks, they can be put in the childs lunch box, or be used during or after a childs exercise (Levine, 1997). Make sure your childs meal contains most of the food groups. Make soda a treat; encourage your child to drink milk instead (Goss, 1999). Food should be used only for nutritional purposes, not for comfort or a reward. Therefore, the Talent Development Programme plays an important role in the organization. It helps in developing the skills of the employees working in the organization. Background of the Company and the Need of TDP Tesco is a retail store that has its head office in United Kingdom and it is operating in country since 1919. Tesco, today, has its branches not only in London but at the same time the branches are there in different other countries as well, which include countries like Australia, and even in countries like India. Tesco today is operating in 12 countries in both Asia and Europe. Tesco today, has the need to develop the talent and the skills of the 1000 Personal Manager and 50 Group Personal Manager. Definition of Talent and Development Programme The researcher, while defining the talent management and development programme and process, states that the organizations have the need of innovation, customer service, sales and at the same time, there is a need for many other things as well. The organization needs to cater to all these things to meet the business goal that is being set by the organization. Therefore, the researcher defines talent development programme or process as something that include an integration of all the process that include, managing, supporting, recruiting, supporting as well as compensation the people for the overall development of these people. It helps in achieving the SMART goals set by the organization for talent development. Used in organization, like most of the model it is a coaching model. It helps in developing the leadership quality. Mainly in the small teams Since the number of people who needs training is large therefore, it is not that suitable. The model, although, helps in developing leadership quality. Therefore, in that sense it is a suitable model that the organization could adopt. OSKAR OSKAR too is a part of the coaching model, which include five steps. The steps are: O-Refers to the Outcome or the Objective of the coaching session S-It refers to the Scale or rather to the quantification of the performance of the clients, which helps in achieving the goal/objective. K- It refers to the Know-how, or rather to the skills and the knowledge of the clients, which will help in their development. A- It refers to the affirmation and action. R- It refers to the review of the coaching session. The model is both collaborative and achievable at the same time. It caters to need of both the team members and the coach, and tries to achieve the talent development goals. The similarity with most of the model is that it is a coaching model. It can be used in a tough team for achieving larger goals. It can be used in a large size organization like Tesco, where 1000 people require training. EXACT The EXACT model is a coaching model that helps in achieving the SMART goals set for the development of the employees. It helps in achieving the SMART goals set by the organization. Risk taking is an important part of this model and thus most of the time it is different from other models. It is used by the managers to provide training to those people who are not a part of the goal setting process It would not that useful for providing talent development programmes to the managers of Tesco. The managers are always involved in the goal setting process. A stages of Hays model It is a mentoring model that knows the need of the people. The model could also realise that the people want to grow and change. It helps in easily solving the problems that are faced by the mentee. It is different from all the other, model because it is a mentoring model and not a coaching model. It is mainly used by the educators and teachers. Not a very suitable model in this particular case. Skills Required to Provide Coaching and Mentoring The skills that are important for coaching/mentoring include, questioning, listening, feed as well as other inter-personal skills. The coach should smile to make the listener feel that attention is given to his/her word. There should be a normal eye contact between two people.
